Tower Road Widening Project

The Tower Road widening project is one of five projects in Commerce City’s voter-approved capital improvement program. The project includes expanding Tower Road from two to four lanes between E. 80th and E. 103rd avenues to provide a higher level of service, improve safety, increase vehicle capacity, and accommodate pedestrians, bicyclists and vehicles.

Construction began in May 2016 and is scheduled to be complete in December 2017 (weather dependent). Typical project hours are 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Night hours may be used to optimize work during low-travel times. Recent work includes the construction of underground utilities, concrete curbs and sidewalks, roadway base and pavement, and traffic signals.

Traffic Impacts
Tower Road has reopened between E. 88th and E. 96th avenues. The route will remain open to alleviate congestion. Drivers can expect periodic delays, detours and lane shifts during construction. The project added reflectors and lighting in the cone zone to improve traveler safety and continues to evaluate signal timing to minimize motorist impacts. One lane of traffic in each direction will be maintained until the end of the project.

What’s Ahead - April and May 2017

Underground utility installation, roadway base and pavement work will continue on the west side of Tower Road from E. 81st to 88th avenues. Sidewalks are being installed between E. 88th and E. 96th avenues. Underground utility installation, roadway base and pavement work has started from E. 96th to E. 103rd avenues. A separate project to construct a ramp from Tower Road onto westbound Peña Boulevard is expected to begin later this year and open to traffic in 2018.
